One week has passed, and so it's time for Days of Decadence again. We want to thank all of the viewers for reading the first blog and thank you for the positive feedback thus far. This issue will be purely windows stuff, although we are pretty sure any OS user will enjoy it. Dating one of the works to 2004, this could be new to some of you customizers. Unfortunately this also means not many resources from these works are available, but as it happens, many legendary skins have been ported over the years, and maybe this inspires experienced skinner/s to port some once again. With that out of the way, let's get started!
Pixel Elegance by heylove
Starting with the earliest of these works, Pixel Elegance by heylove is one of those setups that just don't care about the rules and although aware of them, breaking them really helped to create a complete and stylistically original desktop setup. Whole interface sinks into the background, which is also styled in one of the era's favourite concepts, making one consistent canvas. If you still want to dig in, XP style and winamp are still available to download.
AKII by imrik
AKII is one of those setups that have been in some way or another, replicated and reused in many skins and setups across many OS over the years. From soft contrast between the windows and the wallpaper, to unbalanced rounded corners on widgets and geometric thin typography, it really represents a lot of what has been a centre of inspiration for mainly windows skinners throughout the years. It's hard to actually believe this screenshot is more than 10 years old.. If you are still looking for these or similar resources, search for projects like GAIA or AMANA.
This iconic setup also found it's way to some of our brains and still stands today as fresh and usable as when it was first submitted. Small pixel-detailed UI is punched with saturated blue, which gives the setup life again. Minimal pattern in the background is a perfect choice aswell. There were many of these setups over the years but the execution of HISH stands out of the pack for sure.
Synergy by kowoolo
Continuing this week's featured submissions is this very stylish synergy of glow and metal. It's a cool child of previous OS X design philosophies and lost last.fm alpha. The great contrast between all elements, and pixel perfect detailing surely strike at first glance, but it's also the simplicity of some visual style elements (scrollbars, caption..) that adds more balanced feel to the wallpaper. The glow also adds a nice finishing touch and connection to the wallpaper, it's not overdone, but still very visible.
That’s it for this week's issue of Days of Decadence. Spread the word and share it with your custo friends, and of course if you have any interesting works from this era you can always propose them to our favourites – featured folder, that way you can be sure we won't overlook them in the future. Happy customizing!
